Youth invited for day of shotgun shooting, food, and prizes

PRATT– The 22nd Kinsley Kids Klassic, an annual trapshooting event, will be held Saturday, Sept 20. The event is open to youth shooters through high school age, including 2014 graduates. Cost to attend is $25 and includes 100 targets, lunch, event t-shirt and door prize. Registrations must be received by Sept. 15.

Competitors will first shoot 50 16-yard targets at the Dodge City Gun Club, followed by lunch in Kinsley, and 50 handicap targets at the Kinsley Gun Club.

Every shooter will get a door prize, including a chance to win one of four guns, which will be awarded by drawing. Thirty-four Cabela’s gift certificates and Olympic-style medals will be given in each of four age groups for individual shooters. The top three teams will earn trophies and shotgun shells for their program. Special trophies will be reserved for young ladies and 4-H members.

BIRDING BIG YEAR COMPETITION SIGN-UP STILL OPEN

It’s not too late to sign up for the Kansas Birding Big Year competition

PRATT – Birders can still sign up for the 2013 Kansas Birding Big Year, a competition where participants attempt to observe as many species of birds as they can within the borders of Kansas. Unlike other “big year” competitions that span the U.S. in a calendar year, participants in the Kansas Birding Big Year can compete any time now through Dec. 31, 2013.

“The real driving force behind this competition is getting folks into the Kansas outdoors to enjoy nature and the fun wildlife watching opportunities available,” said KDWPT wildlife education coordinator Mike Rader. “We also hope this competition will help show folks just how many different kinds of birds either migrate through or call Kansas home.”

Participants can compete in one of three categories: youth (16 and under), adult (17-64), and senior (65 and up) by logging their data into the online service, eBird, available on the Cornell University web site, www.ebird.org. Winners from each category will receive prizes to be awarded next January. Event sponsors include Acorn Naturalists, Cabela's, Bass Pro Shops, Bushnell, and Walmart.

Participants must register for the competition, at http://ksoutdoors.com/birding-big-year or by emailing Rader at mike.rader@ksoutdoors.com. To compete, birders will submit their list totals online. Birds must be observed within Kansas boundaries, and must be species accepted by the Kansas Bird Records Committee of the Kansas Ornithological Society. Qualified birds must be alive, wild and unrestrained, and diagnostic field marks must be seen, and/or heard and documented by the recorder.

PHEASANT FEST OFFERS FREE ADMITTANCE TO MILITARY

National event free with military ID on Feb. 17-19
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever has announced that all active military personnel will receive free admission to its National Pheasant Fest & Quail Classic when the event comes to the Kansas City Convention Center’s Bartle Hall on Feb. 17, 18, and 19.

Active duty personnel who present their U.S. Military ID cards will receive free entrance to event from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. This will be the show’s first time in Kansas City and the first time free admission has been extended to military members.

“Men and women of the military make the ultimate commitment to their country,” says Joe Duggan, Pheasants Forever’s vice president of corporate relations. “They sacrifice a lot to serve, including time they might otherwise have spent hunting, fishing, and enjoying the outdoors. This is a small token of our appreciation, and we hope to see many service members on the floor, so we can personally thank them for standing up for this nation and its wildlife and natural resources.”

The National Pheasant Fest & Quail Classic is the country's largest event for upland bird hunters, sport dog owners, and wildlife habitat conservationists, combining a national outdoor tradeshow, wildlife habitat seminar series, and family event complete with puppies, tractors, shotguns, and art. KANSAS PRODUCING WINNERS IN CABELA’S FISHING PROMOTION

Fourteen tagged fish worth $200-$300 caught in Kansas so far
PRATT — Cabela’s and Wanna Go Fishing TV have tagged hundreds of fish in lakes near select Cabela’s retail stores, including several in Kansas, and as of mid-June, 14 of these fish have been caught in the Sunflower State.

While Cabela’s has not released the last names of winners yet, first names of anglers and the reservoirs where they have caught tagged fish include Elijah R., Kanopolis; Ron M., Cheney; Ralph A., Kanopolis; Bruce W., Glen Elder; Donnie A., El Dorado; Wade J., Glen Elder; Robert H., Kanopolis; Jeff H., Glen Elder; Monte N., Kanopolis; Anh H., Cheney; Gary D., Kanopolis; Tuan T., Cheney; Jerry P., Kanopolis; and Dennis H., Milford. These tagged fish have been worth various prizes worth $200 to $300.

Only anglers registered for the contest are eligible for prizes, but by catching the grand-prize tagged fish while using an Abu Garcia reel spooled with Berkley line, anglers can double the winnings. Catch the grand prize fish while sporting Costa sunglasses or Sperry Top-Sider shoes, and you can increase the prize package by $100,000. By using all of the equipment, and catching the grand-prize tagged fish, the package more than doubles from $1 million to $2.2 million. The 50th tag redeemed will win a $10,000 Cabela’s shopping spree that can be redeemed in a store or online.

Tagged fish have been released in Milford, Glen Elder, Cheney, Cedar Bluff, Hillsdale, Clinton, Kanopolis, and El Dorado reservoirs. All prize winners will be announced online after July 14.
